Practical information

Practical work
NEM sends practical workers to the Middle East to serve among Jews and Arabs. The kind of work depends on local needs and often includes nursing, caring for people with disabilities and refugees, teaching, children and youth ministries, technical work and maintenance. Together with the candidate NEM looks for a suitable job, taking into account the training and skills of the candidate. It can be said that in some ways NEM acts as an employment agency.

Ministry of reconciliation in Israel and the Arab world
The conflicts in the Middle East are complex and the people deeply divided. Unfortunately the church has often played a negative role in Middle Eastern history. We remember the Crusades and the persecution of Jews. For this reason it's important that people who are sent through NEM live and work in the Middle East with an attitude of humility and witness in a way sensitive to the wrong doings of the past. In this way we engage in the ministry of reconciliation.
Another way in which NEM is involved in reconciliation in Israel is by joining local projects in which Jews and Arabs work together.
In most cases however, NEM workers serve in projects on one side of the conflict. But we believe that sharing the love of Jesus in a practical way can soften hearts and help pave the path for reconciliation.

Prayer ministry
According to Isaiah 19:23 reconciliation between Jews and Arabs will only be fully realised when they serve the God of Israel together. A miracle is needed through the work of the Holy Spirit! All NEM workers are therefore sent with a call to pray regularly for the Highway of peace. They come together at least twice a month in small groups for times of sharing and intercession. Prayer is focussed not only on personal needs for the projects, but also on the needs of their colleagues on the other side of the conflict and political issues. Their prayers for peace stand as signs to the true peace that will come when Jesus returns to Jerusalem.
