Practical information
Practical work NEM sends practical workers to the Middle East to serve Jew and Arab. The kind of work is dependent on local needs and often includes nursing, caring for the handicapped and refugees, teaching, children's and teenage ministries, technical work and maintenance. Together with the candidate, NEM looks for a suitable job taking into account the training and skills of the candidate. In some ways NEM acts as an employment agency. Ministry of reconciliation in Israel and the Arab world The conflicts in the Middle East are complex and the peoples deeply divided. Unfortunately the church has often played a negative role in Middle Eastern history. We remember the crusades and the persecution of Jews. For this reason people sent through NEM live and work in the Middle East with an attitude of humbleness and witness in a way sensitive to the wrong doings of the past. In this way we engage in the ministry of reconciliation. Another way in which NEM is involved in reconciliation in Israel, is by joining local projects in which Jews and Arabs are working. In most cases however, NEM workers serve in projects on one side of the conflict. But in sharing the love of Jesus in a very practical way, we believe that hearts are softened and the path for reconciliation is paved. Prayer ministry According to Isaiah 19:23 reconciliation between Jew and Arab will only be fully realised when they serve the God of Israel together. A miracle is needed through the work of the Holy Spirit! All NEM workers are therefore sent with a call to pray regularly for the Highway of peace. They come together at least twice per month in small groups for a time of sharing and intercession. Prayer is focussed not only on personal needs for the projects, but on needs of colleagues on the other side of the conflict and on political issues, praying for peace as a sign for the true peace which is coming with Jesus Christ when He returns to Jerusalem. |
